Thanks to our readers for the many good tips sent in response to our recent glossary on Historic Paving and Sidewalks in New England, especially to Jessica Rowcroft for her two excellent suggestions. The first was a reference to a detailed history of granite quarrying on Cape Ann – Hammers on Stone: The History of Cape Ann Granite by Barbara Erkkila. The book contains fascinating details of the production of paving stones from hundreds of small sites (called “motions”) as well as larger quarrying operations that provided Cape Ann granite for the construction of buildings up and down the east coast. Published in 1980, the book is out of print but is available as a pdf download through Historic Ipswich (https://historicipswich.org/2015/12/29/hammers-on-stone-the-story-of-cape-ann-granite/) It’s a good well-illustrated read. The second tip was paying a visit to Halibut Point State Park in Rockport which contains the former Babson Farm Quarry and a self-guided tour of the remnants of quarrying on the site (https://www.mass.gov/files/documents/2016/12/ne/halb.pdf). I haven’t visited the park, yet, but it is on my list.
